NHS Blood Pressure Check Service

What is the NHS Blood Pressure Check Service?

Some people can get a free blood pressure check at many pharmacies without needing an appointment. The check is quick, simple and can help identify high blood pressure early which may reduce your risk of serious health conditions, such as heart attack and stroke.

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, usually has no symptoms, so many people may not realise they have it.

Who can use it?

The NHS Blood Pressure Check Service is available to people aged 40 and over who have no history of having been told by their GP that they have high blood pressure.

Why is it important to check your blood pressure?

High blood pressure increases your risk of heart attack, stroke and other cardiovascular conditions.

According to the British Heart Foundation, as many as 5 million adults in the UK have high blood pressure and do not know they are at risk.

Many people with high blood pressure do not experience any symptoms, which is why having a check at least every 5 years is important.

What happens during a consultation?

You will usually speak with a member of the pharmacy team in a private consultation room.

During the consultation, the pharmacy team will:

  • Measure your blood pressure using a cuff placed around your upper arm
  • Explain your result, what it means and provide you with a copy
  • Provide advice on maintaining a healthy lifestyle, where suitable
  • Discuss any next steps that may be appropriate

If your blood pressure reading is higher than expected, you may be offered a blood pressure monitor to take home. This allows your blood pressure to be measured several times during your normal daily activities and helps provide a more accurate picture of your blood pressure over time.

You will return the monitor to the pharmacy so the results can be reviewed and discussed with you.

What happens when my blood pressure is high?

If your blood pressure reading indicates that further checks are needed, you may be referred to your GP practice. The pharmacy team will explain the next steps and help you understand how to access any further care you may need.
